How Are Paycheck Taxes Calculated?
Your take-home pay is calculated by subtracting several taxes from your gross income. Federal income tax uses a progressive bracket system — each portion of your income is taxed at a different rate. For 2024, the brackets for Single filers are 10% on income up to $11,600, 12% up to $47,150, 22% up to $100,525, 24% up to $191,950, 32% up to $243,725, 35% up to $609,350, and 37% on income above that. FICA taxes include Social Security at 6.2% on income up to $168,600 and Medicare at 1.45% on all income (plus an additional 0.9% on income above $200,000 for Single filers). State income taxes vary widely by state; this calculator uses an average flat rate of 4.6%. Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and HSA contributions reduce your taxable income, which can lower your overall tax burden.
